Statement

I photograph the moments a place stops performing — mist settling on a ridge, a wave withdrawing, a body between movements. Each edition is printed by hand on archival cotton rag, signed and numbered, and never reprinted.

Together Apart

A self-published book and series documenting a generation at windows during the COVID-19 lockdowns — shortlisted for the Royal Photographic Society International Open Call.

Through the more expressive medium of black and white photography, Natasha has captured this generation and their magnified experiences during the COVID lockdowns without straying into the zones of cliché. This book brings together the experiences and observations used to accommodate the feelings of tension and trepidation that we all experienced: one species across the Earth.

Windows are used creatively both as a literal and metaphorical demonstration of the isolation and detainment of each portrait. The framing and composition create a superb record of the injustices suffered at such an exciting time of life, when our strongest friendships and most important life skills are formed.

Self-published as a limited edition book, Together Apart was winner of Portrait of Britain 2021 and featured in Black + White Photography magazine.

Bracken Rolling

Conservation by horse power in the parks and green spaces of London — Shires, Clydesdales and Comtois at work.

For the past two years I have been working on a personal project about bracken rolling and conservation in the parks and green spaces of London, using the gentle giants of horse power: the magnificent Shires, Clydesdales and Comtois.

It is a sustainable and environmentally friendly method of ploughing, harrowing, reseeding, logging, rolling meadows and pasture, bracken rolling, and mowing hay and wild flower meadows. Working with these horses helps restore the ecosystem and biodiversity in the city — low noise disturbance to wildlife, a low carbon footprint and no pollution.

I find it fascinating, calming and therapeutic to be in the company of these beautiful animals, and to witness traditional, ‘old fashioned’ practices carried on within a city. These photographs are not for sale.

Natasha Durlacher

Natasha Durlacher is a photographer working between London and the mountains, making images of landscape, water and the human figure. Her work is concerned with atmosphere: the way weather, distance and light quietly reorganise a scene.

Alongside her personal projects she takes on a small number of commissions each year, and releases new print editions seasonally. Prints are held in private collections in the UK, Europe and the United States.
